About This Site
This site is designed as an educational tool for students enrolled in the Department of Journalism & Public Relations at California State University, Chico. Specifically, this site focuses on JOUR 451: Digital Media Innovation for News & PR.
This course is designed to help J&PR students explore the world of startups and what it takes to become a successful digital media entrepreneur. As highlighted by Paul Graham, college grads have more choices today than just getting a job or going to grad school. They have the opportunity to create their own company. My goal with Digital Media Innovation is to inspire students to combine their passion for storytelling with their digital know-how to discover if being an entrepreneur is in their career path.
In this course students invent a for-profit digital media concept. They’ll back up this concept with a business plan, and they’ll learn how to do The Pitch to get investors on board. They’ll hear from our alumni working in digital media startups and other entrepreneurial endeavors. And, they’ll dive headfirst into the ambiguity and uncertainty that is life in a startup.
Finally, we’ll break the notion that being a journalist means that you don’t have to know how your organization makes money. We’re going to deal with money – how can you make it with your journalistic skills in this digital age.
This is an exciting time to be in journalism and public relations.
