Let the Adventure Begin

Welcome to the website for Digital Media Startups, a new course in entrepreneurial journalism from Chico State’s Department of Journalism & Public Relations.

This course is designed to help you explore the world of startups and what it takes to become a successful entrepreneur. As highlighted by Paul Graham, college grads have more choices today than just getting a job or going to grad school. You have the opportunity to create your own company. My goal with Digital Media Startups is to inspire you to combine your passion for storytelling with your digital know-how to discover if being an entrepreneur is your career path.

In this course you’re going to invent a for-profit digital media concept. You’ll back up this concept with a business plan and learn how to do The Pitch so you can get investors on board. You’re going to dive headfirst into the ambiguity and uncertainty that is life in a startup. And, you’re going to deal with money – how can you make it with your journalistic skills?

This is an exciting time to be in journalism and public relations. Just contemplate the changes coming to an iconic institution like The Washington Post now that the guy who started Amazon owns it. For those in PR, think about how digital is contributing to the growth of PR storytelling opportunities via ethical use of sponsored content. What career opportunities exist for you in this quickly changing communication landscape?

Let’s get this adventure started. I can’t wait to see what we’ll all develop in the next 15 weeks.
